Bipolar disorder is a complex, lifelong condition characterized by significant shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels that can affect every area of a person’s life — relationships, work, sleep, and sense of self. At Vista Mental Health, we offer comprehensive, individualized care for bipolar disorder, combining evidence-based psychiatric treatment with therapy and close ongoing monitoring to help you achieve stability and quality of life.
Conditions We Treat
Bipolar disorder presents differently in every person. We provide evaluation and care for:
- Bipolar I Disorder — defined by manic episodes lasting at least seven days, or of any duration if hospitalization is required, often alternating with depressive episodes. Manic episodes involve elevated or irritable mood, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, increased goal-directed activity, and impulsive or risky behavior.
- Bipolar II Disorder — characterized by a pattern of hypomanic episodes (less severe than full mania) and major depressive episodes. Bipolar II is frequently misdiagnosed as depression, as the hypomanic periods may go unrecognized.
- Cyclothymic Disorder — a milder but chronic pattern of hypomanic and depressive symptoms lasting at least two years that does not meet full criteria for Bipolar I or II, but can still meaningfully impair daily functioning.
- Bipolar Disorder with Mixed Features — episodes in which symptoms of both mania/hypomania and depression occur simultaneously, often associated with greater distress and more complex treatment needs.
- Bipolar Disorder with Rapid Cycling — four or more mood episodes within a twelve-month period, requiring careful monitoring and often more complex medication management.
What We Offer
Diagnosis & Assessment — Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective bipolar care. We conduct this thorough psychiatric evaluations that include a detailed history of mood episodes, sleep patterns, family history, and prior treatment responses. Because bipolar disorder is frequently misdiagnosed, particularly as unipolar depression, we take time to understand the full picture before recommending a treatment plan.
Medication Management — Mood stabilization is typically the cornerstone of bipolar treatment. Our psychiatrists prescribe and carefully monitor FDA-approved and evidence-based medications for bipolar disorder, tailored to your specific presentation, episode history, and tolerability. Treatment plans are adjusted over time in response to your symptoms and goals.
Therapy — Medication alone is often not sufficient. Our licensed therapists offer evidence-based approaches that have demonstrated effectiveness alongside medication for bipolar disorder. Therapy focuses on identifying early warning signs, stabilizing daily routines, managing stress, and improving relationship functioning.
Biofeedback — Sleep disruption and stress dysregulation are common triggers for mood episodes in bipolar disorder. Biofeedback helps patients develop greater awareness and control of physiological stress responses, supporting the sleep and mood stability that are central to long-term wellness.
Integrative & Adjunctive Options — We take a whole-person approach to bipolar care, incorporating evidence-informed integrative strategies alongside conventional treatment, including sleep hygiene support, lifestyle medicine, nutritional considerations, and stress management techniques.
Telehealth & Flexible Care — We offer telehealth appointments for both therapy and medication management when clinically appropriate. Consistent follow-up is especially important in bipolar care, and virtual options can help reduce barriers to ongoing treatment.
